The Ski Mountain
Mount Shasta Ski Park offers two personalities: one a family-friendly, Kodak-worthy ski vacation and the other an adventurous, out-of-bounds backcountry experience. Whichever personality best describes the ski days you’re after, the mountain serves up excellent options. For the family, the in-bounds terrain spans 425 acres and 32 marked runs across three separate peaks that provide natural terrain progression for first-timers through to experts. For those experts, the endless hike-to-terrain lies in plain sight. Mount Shasta also has an extensive night skiing operation – 14 trails and three lifts – with skiing until 9pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
The Mountain Experience
Mount Shasta Ski Park is a quiet escape from larger commercial resorts. Lift tickets as low as $50 allow large families to experience an authentic ski vacation without breaking the bank. The mountain draws passionate locals from nearby towns Mount Shasta, Weed and McCloud. Families in the area also frequent Mount Shasta for good conditioning before traveling to the larger resorts around Lake Tahoe. Because of the small operation and surplus of loyal, laid back locals, it feels like a ski mountain contently trapped in the ‘60s – easy going and free spirited.

Mount Shasta Ski Terrain
• Beginner: First-time skiers and riders can enjoy the rope tow. A mellow slope within view of the lodge, this is an ideal spot to perfect those first turns. Children use the magic carpet to attempt their first descents of the slope. For those ready to progress to the next level, Marmot Ridge offers access to the majority of Shasta’s beginner trails, many of which, are designated “slow skiing zones.” These include Midnight Sun and Blue Grouse.

• Intermediate: With 55 percent of the skiable terrain marked as blue squares, Mount Shasta provides plenty of options for intermediates. All lifts serve intermediate terrain, and every trail leads to the base lodge making the possibility of getting lost unlikely. Eagle’s Flight is a favorite intermediate cruiser.
• Advanced: From Douglas Butte, long-flowing black diamond runs provide high-speed turns from top to bottom. Tree skiing is a great adventure for experts seeking off-piste thrills. Backcountry skiers can take advantage of the Beyond the Boundaries program. Beyond the Boundaries takes skiers on affordable guided tours into the backcountry with lunch at the warming hut on Grey Butte included.

• Terrain Park: A beginner progression park with smaller features in a non-intimidating environment is located off of Marmot Ridge. Revolution Terrain Park is designed for more aggressive riders. The large jump line and rail garden feeds the needs of those dialing in their skills. Unique features, including a monster tire, wave box and battleship provide a refreshing departure from more traditional park designs.

Best Advice
Take advantage of the spring corn skiing! While most Californian’s will be sipping Bloody Mary’s at one of the Tahoe area resorts, you can get the most out of your lift ticket by rising early to shuck fresh corn, that is, shred the soft spring snow that spoils Mount Shasta’s higher elevations. If you really want to get after it, throw your skis on your back and hike above the resort boundary for first tracks each day till late into the spring.

Après Skiing
Head into the town of Mount Shasta for a cold brew and a hearty meal after a day on the slopes. The Goat Tavern and Wayside Grill often have live music and happy hour specials throughout the winter. On the mountain, Sliders Bar a perfect place for a pint of locally-brewed beer, small plates and appetizers.

Lodging
While there is no on-mountain lodging at Mount Shasta Ski Park, overnight RV parking is permitted in the parking lot and is a popular option. Skiing With Kids
Skiing with kids is pretty painless due to the amount of beginner terrain. Most of the inbounds skiing is beginner or kid-friendly – not too intimidating or steep. If mom and dad prefer to scout for powder sans kids, the mountain provides several different group and private lessons from first-timers who have never ridden a lift to experienced riders eager to learn freestyle skiing. Many of the lesson packages include rentals and a lift ticket valid during the lesson. The Family & Friends Package is ideal for any family or group of friends that prefer to cut costs and learn together.
